IPL VS RESURFX — WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE, AND WHEN DOES COMBINING THEM MAKE SENSE?

When clients come to SVIT Aesthetics asking about laser treatments, one of the most common points of confusion is the difference between IPL and ResurFX. Both are available on the Lumenis Stellar M22 — the advanced multi-platform system at the heart of our laser offerings — but they work in fundamentally different ways and are designed to address different skin concerns.

Understanding the distinction helps you have a much more informed conversation about what your skin actually needs, and whether one or both might support your goals.

WHAT IS IPL — AND WHAT IS IT DESIGNED TO ADDRESS?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a traditional laser, which emits a single wavelength of light, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths simultaneously, allowing it to target a range of chromophores — the elements in skin responsible for pigment and redness — at once.

At SVIT, IPL photofacial treatments using the Stellar M22 are commonly sought by clients whose skin concerns include:

- The appearance of sunspots, age spots, and uneven pigmentation

- Visible redness and facial flushing

- The appearance of broken capillaries or vascular irregularities

- Generally uneven skin tone related to sun exposure or environmental factors

IPL works at a surface-to-mid level in the skin, making it well-suited for tone and colour concerns. Most clients describe the sensation as a brief, warm snap — and the treatment typically involves minimal downtime, with some temporary redness in the hours following.

Results vary by individual, and a series of sessions is commonly recommended for the best cumulative appearance improvement. We will assess your skin tone, pigmentation type, and goals before recommending the appropriate approach.

WHAT IS RESURFX — AND WHAT IS IT DESIGNED TO ADDRESS?

ResurFX is a non-ablative fractional laser — a different category of treatment altogether. Where IPL addresses tone and colour, ResurFX works on skin texture and structural concerns by delivering fractional laser energy into the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating the skin's natural process of collagen production over time.

ResurFX treatments are commonly sought for:

- The appearance of fine lines and early texture changes

- Mild acne scarring and the appearance of post-acne marks

- Overall skin smoothness and refinement of pore appearance

- General skin resurfacing for a more even surface texture

Because ResurFX is non-ablative, it works beneath the surface without removing the outer skin layer — which means recovery time is generally minimal compared to more aggressive resurfacing options. Clients typically experience some temporary warmth and mild redness following the session.

As with all aesthetic treatments, results vary by individual and are influenced by skin type, the number of sessions, and aftercare.

THE KEY DIFFERENCE IN PLAIN TERMS

The simplest way to think about it: IPL is primarily a tone treatment, and ResurFX is primarily a texture treatment.

If your main concerns are dark spots, redness, or uneven colour — IPL is the more targeted choice. If your main concerns are skin smoothness, fine lines, mild scarring, or surface refinement — ResurFX is the more relevant option. And if your skin has both types of concerns, which is common, that is where combining them becomes particularly interesting.

WHY THE LUMENIS STELLAR M22 MATTERS

The Lumenis Stellar M22 is one of the few platforms that houses both IPL and ResurFX in a single system — and it is widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated platforms of its kind available today. At SVIT Aesthetics, we invested in the Stellar M22 specifically because of the flexibility it offers. Older IPL systems were limited in their precision and customisation. The M22 allows for a much higher degree of treatment tailoring based on individual skin type, concern, and desired outcome.

This matters in practice because no two clients — and no two skin profiles — are exactly the same. The ability to adjust parameters within the same session, or to sequence IPL and ResurFX thoughtfully over a treatment plan, makes a meaningful difference in what can be supported.

WHEN COMBINING IPL AND RESURFX MAKES SENSE

For clients whose skin shows both tone irregularities and texture concerns — which is extremely common, particularly in clients who have experienced years of Texas sun exposure — combining IPL and ResurFX in a single session or across a planned series is something Yuliia frequently discusses during consultations.

The combination approach allows both surface tone and deeper texture to be addressed in a more coordinated way, rather than treating each concern in isolation over a much longer timeline. It is not the right choice for everyone, and candidacy depends on skin tone, skin sensitivity, and current skin condition — all of which Yuliia assesses thoroughly before any recommendation is made.
